Doug Fiefia Becomes First Tongan State Senator in US History

A Tongan-American politician has made history after winning his primary election to become the first Tongan elected to a state senate in United States history.

Doug Fiefia, who currently serves in the Utah House of Representatives, will soon take his seat in the Utah State Senate, representing around 120,000 residents.

Speaking during a recent visit to Tonga, Fiefia said the milestone was both humbling and significant for Tongans around the world.

"I will be the first Tongan state senator in the history of America, and I'm honoured to serve."

Fiefia said his election reflects the growing political influence of Pacific Islanders in the United States. His new constituency includes a Tongan community of several thousand people, many of whom played a key role in his campaign by volunteering and fundraising.

"They were some of my biggest volunteers and biggest donors who helped us get this last win. I'm honoured to represent our people."

Before entering politics, Fiefia spent five years working at Google, where his experience in the technology sector inspired him to pursue public office.

He said one of his key priorities is protecting young people online as technology continues to evolve.

"My focus has been keeping our children safe online as it relates to social media and artificial intelligence."

Alongside his legislative role, Fiefia chairs Utah's Artificial Intelligence Task Force and also leads a national AI task force, working with lawmakers across the United States to develop policies and best practices around artificial intelligence and online safety.

While in Tonga, Fiefia met with Acting Prime Minister Dr Viliami Latu to discuss ways to strengthen economic ties between Tonga and Tongans living in the United States.

The discussions focused on making it easier for members of the Tongan diaspora to invest in their homeland and contribute to Tonga's economic growth.

"We looked at how we can make it easier for Tongans in America to invest here in Tonga and help the economy thrive."

Fiefia's father is from Ha'ateiho in Tongatapu, while his mother has roots in Fahefa and Ha'apai. He said returning to Tonga helps strengthen his family's connection to their heritage.

"Every time we come here, it reminds us where our ancestors come from and helps us pass that torch to the next generation."

Fiefia's election marks a historic milestone for Tongans in American politics and highlights the growing influence of Pacific Island communities in public leadership, while reinforcing the enduring connection between Pacific diaspora communities and their island homelands.
