Everything you need to know to VOTE!
Election day is Saturday 7 November 2026, but you don't have to wait until then. Voting is already open, and there are more ways to have your say than many people realise. Here's what you need to know to make your vote count.
You can vote anywhere in New Zealand
You can vote at any voting place in the country, no matter which electorate you live in. If you're away from home for work, study or visiting whānau, you can still vote wherever you are.
The Electoral Commission does suggest voting close to home if you can, as it can make issuing your voting papers quicker.
When you can vote
Voting opened on Monday 26 October and closes at 7pm on Saturday 7 November.
- Before election day: advance voting places are open now, but their days and hours vary, so check before you go.
- On election day: every voting place is open from 9am to 7pm.
Working on election day? Voting early is an easy way to get it done.
What to bring when you vote
You don't need to bring much. Here's what helps:
- Your EasyVote card or voting slip. It makes voting faster and easier. This year many cards were sent by email, so you can show it on your phone, or print or screenshot it before you go.
- Your own pen, if you like. There will be pens at the voting place if you forget.
No card? No problem. You can still vote without it. Staff will ask for your name and address and look you up on the electoral roll. You don't need to bring ID.
Voting from overseas
If you're an enrolled New Zealander living or travelling overseas, you may still be able to vote. The quickest way is usually to download your voting papers online, and some countries also have in-person overseas voting places. Overseas voting rules have changed for this election, so check whether you're eligible at vote.nz/overseas.
Help is on hand
Election staff at every voting place are there to show you what to do and answer your questions. Many voting places are set up to be accessible, with ramps, room to move, and parking or public transport nearby.
If you can't get to a voting place, for example because you're in hospital, other options are available. Call the Electoral Commission to talk them through.
One thing to remember: please don't take photos or film inside a voting place, out of respect for other voters' privacy.
