Fiji Airways Makes History as Small Island Carrier Named Among World’s Top 10 Airlines

From the Islands to the World: Fiji Airways Named One of the Top 10 Airlines Globally
As Fijians across the world celebrate Fijian Language Week, there’s another reason to say Vinaka vakalevu with pride. Fiji Airways has made history.
The national airline has been named an APEX World Class Airline for 2026, placing it among the Top 10 Airlines in the World. It is the first in Oceania to receive the honour and the smallest airline ever to earn the prestigious title.
It’s hardly a surprise Fiji Airways has earned top honours. Fijians are known across the moana for their hospitality. They’ll hand you a bula smile, a cold drink, and if things really get out of hand, maybe even a gentle reminder to stay seated (just ask the passenger who had to be taped down mid-flight).
The recognition comes after years of transformation across every part of the airline. From sourcing local produce and redesigning onboard service to retraining hundreds of cabin crew, Fiji Airways has worked tirelessly to match the world’s best.
Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen called the moment “a proud and historic” one for both the airline and for Fiji.
“In 2016, we were ranked outside the world’s Top 100 airlines. Today, through sheer grit, relentless innovation, and the unbreakable spirit of our people, we have risen to be named one of the Top 10 Airlines in the World.”
He said the award is more than just recognition; it’s a statement about what’s possible for a small island nation.
“This recognition is not just an award, it’s about showing every Fijian, and every member of our team, that we can achieve the impossible. We are the David in a world of Goliaths, and we are winning.”
The APEX World Class Award is determined through a rigorous process combining independent audits and global passenger feedback, measuring excellence in safety, sustainability, well-being, service, and customer experience.
For Fiji Airways, earning the accolade meant transforming every touchpoint of the passenger journey. From new galley equipment and upgraded premium products to Pacific Rim-inspired cuisine, the airline reimagined what “Fijian hospitality” could look like at 30,000 feet.
“To excel, we cannot afford to be ordinary,” said Viljoen. “We need to stand out, to be unmistakably remarkable, and to create an experience so extraordinary that travellers choose Fiji Airways not just for where we fly, but for how we make them feel.”
As the world takes notice, Fiji Airways’ success shines a global spotlight on Fiji as a premier travel destination and reminds Fijians everywhere what can be achieved with yalo dina (true spirit) and unity.
“Today, we celebrate together with our staff, loyal guests, stakeholders, and the nation of Fiji. Vinaka vakalevu. The world is watching, and we are soaring.”
