Auckland teen Jawsh 685 is #1 on the iTunes chart

'Local teen producer Jawsh 685 speaks to Music 101's Charlotte Ryan about the success of his song 'Laxed (Siren Beat)' and his collaboration with global superstar Jason Derulo.

Jawsh 685 is 17-year-old musician and producer Joshua Stylah from Auckland's Manurewa. You've probably heard his island-infused dance track ‘Laxed (Siren Beat)’, even though you might not know it.

The track's been used in over 30 million TikTok creations in just a few weeks. Celebrities such as Lizzo, Jimmy Fallon and Jessica Alba have all posted their own take on the dance challenge that features the track.

And pop superstar Jason Derulo used the beat on his worldwide smash 'Savage Love', which sat at the top of the global iTunes chart over the weekend.

Manurewa High student Jawsh says he only started making music on his computer in February last year, and his chart-topping tune was made in his tiny bedroom.

Samoan 17-year-old Joshua Nanai's viral 'Laxed (Siren Beat)' sampled by Jason DeRulo & signs to major label

Samoan 17 year old Joshua Nanai aka Jawsh 685, a Year 13 student at Manurewa High School has made waves with his track "Laxed (Siren Beat)" which went viral after it hit TikTok. 

It's been used in the 'Culture Dance' challenge with users around the world dancing to the song and shouting out their own culture.

He had originally posted the track on YouTube in 2019.  According to the New Zealand Herald, after its official release, Laxed (Siren Beat) entered the New Zealand Hot 20 NZ Singles chart at number four.  Globally, the song has also amassed over 6.5 million Spotify streams worldwide and over 8 million views on the original YouTube video uploaded in July 2019.

The song also stormed Shazam charts worldwide, reaching Top 25 positions in 30 countries, including number two on the Global Shazam chart.…more
