Waitui Atea - Saltwater Realm Exhibition

The Auckland libraries present a brand new exhibition, displaying a number of contemporary stories and rare heritage pieces from the pacific. Encouraging people to think about the Pacific in a different way, the exhibition covers 22 islands, and has works spanning from the Tahitian Tapas in Captain Cook’s collection, to materials from the infant navigation school in Samoa.

In collaboration with the Auckland museum, University of Auckland and Maritime museum, Daren Kamali (Senior Creative Pasifika of Auckland libraries) describes the importance of an event like this one; “I think it’s important for us Pacific people living in diaspora, especially living in Aotearoa, and our children mainly. This exhibition is one of the first of it’s kind in Auckland Libraries.” Daren, a Fijian born New Zealander, describes how much he’s learnt from his two years in the role of Senior Creative Pacific, “I’ve learnt more here in New Zealand about the history of Fiji, than my time actually growing up in Fiji, because they never did Fiji studies in schools.…more

Cook Islands first ever Pride Day to be held

The Cook Islands will hold its first ever Pride Day to raise visibility of the country’s LGBT+ community and celebrate the value of diversity and community inclusion.

Pride Day is organised  by Te Tiare Association, the body that represents the Cook Islands’ LGBT+ community. Te Tiare is leading the Pride Cook Islands campaign to end the ongoing criminalisation of same sex relationships.  Under current Cook Islands law same-sex activity is illegal. In November last year the Select Committee reviewing the law stated it wanted to retain the criminal ban. The matter is now expected to go before Parliament in June.

Pride Cook Islands spokesperson Karla Eggelton said Pride Day will help build public understanding and acceptance for the Rainbow community as a watershed moment in the nation’s human rights history draws closer.  The Friday 27 March event is open to all she says.…more

Lineup announced for 'I Love Samoa' benefit concerts in NZ

via Radio New Zealand Pacific

The first lineup announcements have been made for a series of concerts in New Zealand, which aim to raise funds for the families of measles victims in Samoa.

The 'I Love Samoa 2020' concerts will take place in Auckland, Wellington and Australia's Gold Coast from the end of the month.

The concerts will include Ardijah, Annie Crummer, Sammy Johnson, Lole and traditional powerhouses Punialava'a.  Hip hop stars Savage and Swiss will also perform as well as other Pasifika stars.

Organiser Danny 'Brotha D' Leaosavai'i told Radio 531PI the response from the musicians had been heart-warming.

"They're all donating their time and their talents for this.  The monetary value of each of these artists is far beyond what probably we could have paid for...I'm speechless. I want to thank them personally and sincerely."

Brotha D said the lineups might differ at each venue but more details could be found on the event Facebook pages.

He said the aim was to get as much financial assistance to Samoan families as possible.…more

HEILALA PACIFIC GOLD LAGER LAUNCH

New Zealand's first Tongan owned lager being sold in New Zealand - 'Heilala Pacific Gold Lager' was launched at Manukau Pak n Save this morning with 21 pallets on sale to the public which had nearly sold out by lunch time.

The lager is being sold exclusively at Pak n Save in Manukau on a trial basis to test the demand but seeing as it had already sold out by the end of the day we're thinking it's going to be a popular choice of lager for the upcoming summer.

Pak n Save shoppers were treated to a live performance by Three Houses Down frontman Charlie Pome'e, DJ Rocky Ponting was on the 1s & 2s and Mai FM were giving a lucky shopper the chance to win a double pass to One Love Festival in Tauranga.…more
