Brianna Fruean defends Ugandan Activist Vanessa Nakate
Climate Activist from Uganda Vanessa Nakate called out organisers at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue. She delivered a speech highlighting how she felt about the censorship that she and Samoan Climate Activist Brianna Fruean experienced in the organising of the dialogue. Vanessa said that they were made to submit their presentations for approval in advance, were banned from criticising any of the politicians involved, and that their time was continuously cut.
The Dialogue was attended by high-level officials such as German economic and energy minister Peter Altmaier, U.S. climate envoy John Kerry and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen. In her speech Vanessa highlighted the prevalent youth voice censorship and said “It’s the leaders who have failed us, not the young people....this is not naming & shaming...it is just telling the truth. Why are you so afraid of hearing the truth?”.
The following day after the Ugandan activist's keynote delivery a number of people started questioning the legitimacy of Vanessa's claims and questioned whether she was telling the truth.…more

Samoan Women Leaders in Aquaculture
By Fine Mat Creative
As part of International Women’s Month we are showcasing some of the talented and dedicated women in farming and from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Samoa.
Pursuing a purpose nearly always leads to having the courage to make a deliberate choice in following the road less travelled, as Principal Fisheries officer MAF, Su’a Sapeti Tiitii would tell you.
When Su’a first entered the Fisheries division in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Samoa (MAF) fresh from graduating with a Diploma in Environment Resources Management from New Zealand in 2000, the first thing she noticed about her work environment was she was the only female in the office, yet she knew without a doubt – she belonged there.
“I’ve always been interested in environmental science starting from college where I studied biology and geography which got me interested in the eco system especially mangroves eco systems.…more

Covid-19 urgency needed to address an “avalanche of diabetes” amongst the Pacific community
A senior Pacific doctor says that the enthusiasm the New Zealand government has shown to combat the Covid-19 pandemic is also needed to fight the current diabetes crisis.
Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) member and public health physician, Dr Corina Grey, says there has been an “avalanche of diabetes” amongst the Pacific and Māori communities. PMA is teaming up with Te Ohu Rata ō Aotearoa (Māori Medical Practitioners Association) and the New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes, to advocate to the government and Ministry of Health to focus on the care of people living with type 2 diabetes.
Pacific peoples have a significantly higher rate of diabetes than all other ethnic groups. On average, 53 percent of Pacific peoples aged 65-74 years were estimated to have diabetes compared with 10.9 percent of people of European ethnicity aged 65-74 years.
Dr Grey hopes the New Zealand government can address the diabetes problem just as seriously as Covid-19, especially when people living with diabetes have a higher risk of poor outcomes if they contract the Covid-19 virus.…more
Iconic Samoan Resort 'Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa' is helping travellers secure their future ‘Sowful Journey’ while helping local families in need
One of Samoa’s longest-serving resorts, Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa, has partnered with widely-successful grassroots NGO, 'Poutasi Development Trust', to drive Sowful Journeys – a COVID-19 recovery effort with the dual purpose of providing immediate assistance to Samoan families and communities in need, and safeguarding travellers’ dreams of visiting the island destination in the future.
Sowful Journeys seeks to alleviate the extreme financial hardship and consequential societal impacts, including increased malnutrition, rising non-communicable diseases and inadequate opportunities for better livelihoods, that COVID-19 has wrought on the South Pacific nation.
The campaign seeks to change this trajectory by calling on people around the world to visit Sowful Journeys’ crowd-funding site and make a pledge toward essential COVID recovery programs, in return for resort credits and bonuses for future holidays, as well as the heart-warming knowledge that their contribution will directly empower Samoan families.…more
SAMOAN WIDE RECEIVER KENDRICK BOURNE SIGNS WITH THE PATRIOTS
25yr old Samoan Wide Reciever has reportedly signed with the New England Patriots to a three year deal worth $22.5 million according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
This means the San Francisco 49ers have lost their first free agent. Bourne was the 49ers' second-leading receiver in 2020, so losing him is a big blow to coach Kyle Shanahan's offense. In 15 games last season, Bourne caught 49 passes for 667 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Off the field Bourne and his Bourne Blessed Foundation teamed up with ServiceNow to provide Mac laptops to 20 college-bound members of the OK Program on Thursday at West Oakland Youth Center.
He emerged as an undrafted rookie in 2017 and was given a chance with the 49ers sustaining his roster spot there. Bourne will turn 26 this summer and is the youngest of the Patriots reported signings to open free agency.…more
SONNY BILL WILLIAMS HAS JOINED THE NRL ON NINE TEAM!
Cross-code legend Sonny Bill Williams has joined Stan Sport and Nine as a rugby and NRL commentator.
He officially announced his retirement from both Rugby Union and Rugby League yesterday ending a career which includes winning back to back Rugby World Cups with the All Blacks, 2 NRL premierships and 123 games at the Roosters and Bulldogs.
The rugby, league and now boxing star hopes his foray into the commentary booth will prove similarly inspirational for those who might not have had a voice in previous generations.
"I know I represent a lot of young Polynesian boys, Kiwi boys who represent so much on the field and when it comes to off the field we're not really in this space," Williams told Nick McArdle after signing on as a rugby and NRL commentator for Stan Sport and Nine's Wide World of Sports.

Who should get a Matai title? – The Chief debate
By Lefaoali’i Dion Enari
In 2021 Matai (Chief) are not only visible at Samoan events, but are also part of mainstream popular culture. Boxing greats Faumuina To'aletai Mafaufau David Tua, Lupesoliai La'auli Joseph Parker and former All Blacks Captain Fa’alogo Tana Umaga are but a few public figures that can be seen addressed by their Chief title(s) on T.V. Even former New Zealand Prime Minister Leulua'iali'iotumua Bill English and International Superstar Seiuli Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have been formally bestowed titles.
As the visibility of Matai grow, so too does the debate on who is entitled to receive this mark of Chiefdom. These debates have been further heightened by the new law in Samoa, now prohibiting those residing overseas from becoming a Sa’o (head Chief). This law has sparked much controversy, as to who is entitled to certain Matai names. I do not wish to give an answer or solution to this debate. Instead, I wish to provide different insights from my own personal experiences.…more

Dwayne Johnson Trailblazer Award Montage from the 4th Annual HCA Film Awards
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has been honoured with the 'Trailblazer' award at the fourth annual Hollywood Critics Association.
Check out the touching montage they put together for him in the video above which showcases not only his acting and wrestling career but his philanthropic work with first responders and the 'Make-A-Wish' foundation.
He accepted his award via Zoom and dedicated the win to his "trailblazer" - his late father, WWE Hall of Famer, Rocky 'Soulman' Johnson who passed away at the beginning of last year.
In his acceptance speech he said of the video montage "It's the anchoring reminder that if we're lucky enough and we're fortunate enough to be in a position where you can make somebody feel good and you can create moments for them that they will never forget for the rest of their lives, that is power,"
"That's real accountability to humanity when you just do good for people."
