The Strongest weightlifters in Samoa Take On Terron Beckham | Olympic Outposts

See what it takes for Samoans to chase their weightlifting dreams and lift the small Pacific island to be among the best in the world, with Terron Beckham.

We share this video after news that Samoa has withdrawn their three weightlifters from the Tokyo Olympics because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (SASNOC) has confirmed the Government order has led to their withdrawal.

Vaipava Nevo Ioane and Don Opeloge were due to compete in the men’s 67 kilogram and 96kg events at the Games, while Iuniarra Sipaia was Samoa’s representative in the over 87kg women’s event.

All three weightlifters are based in Samoa.  Ioane had been due to compete at a second Olympic Games after representing the nation at Rio 2016.

All Blacks Ava Ceremony in Papakura

The All Blacks were welcomed to Papakura with an Ava ceremony yesterday afternoon. All Blacks TV chatted to Patrick Tuipulotu about the special occasion.

South Seas Healthcare Trust in partnership with the Ministry for Pacific Peoples, co-hosted the All Blacks for two days of cultural activities and community engagement in South Auckland yesterday and today to kick off the Taste of Pasifika Festival   prior to the All Blacks and Maori All Blacks taking on Manu Samoa and Tonga next weekend.

South Seas Healthcare Trust CEO Lemalu Silao Vaisola Sefo said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the South Auckland community to host the All-Blacks squad, in the buildup to the Pasifika tests but also timely for our community, to connect in with such an iconic team, here in our own backyard. The chance to connect the All Blacks with the South Auckland community through genuine engagement is humbling – it is not an everyday occurrence.”

The 34 year old Samoan/Cook Islander is set to make his return to the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos tomorrow night.  He lines up at five-eigth for his first NRL game since 2009 after twelve years away playing in both the AFL and Super Rugby competitions.

Man charged with manslaughter after death of MMA fighter Fau Vake jailed for two years & 9 months

Update:  The man who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of rising MMA fighter Fau Vake in a late night attack in Auckland last year has been sentenced to two years, nine months in jail.

Liufau Vake, 25, known as Fau, died after an attack by a group of four men outside a bar on Symonds Street, just before 3am on 16 May 2021.

After a series of other punches from others, Fau was punched by Daniel Havili in the side of the head while he had his hands by his side. Vake was unable to break his fall and his head hit the asphalt road.

The fall caused a skull fracture and brain bleeding, which, despite surgery, could not be recovered from. Vake died in hospital nine days later.

Fau's brother Ika was also attacked, including by Havili. Ika was hospitalised but survived.

Of the four men charged, Daniel Havili, 30, was the only one charged with manslaughter.…more

POLYNESIANS IN THE 2021 NFL DRAFT

The 2021 NFL Draft was the 86th annual meeting of National Football League franchises to select newly eligible players for the 2021 NFL season. The draft was held in Cleveland from Thursday the 29th of April to Saturday 1st of May.  

Five quarterbacks were selected in the first round including the first Polynesian player to be picked in this years draft - Zach Kapono Wilson - who is of Native Hawaiian heritage and was the #2 overall pick.   The draft also marks the third time the first three picks (Lawrence, Wilson, and Lance) were Quarterbacks.

There are a total of nine players of Polynesian Heritage who were picked up in the 2021 NFL draft and 2 of them were in the Top 10 draft picks - get familiar with them below.
